Open Positions

PhD positions may be available for admitted graduate students in Chemistry, Agricultural & Environmental Chemistry, or Atmospheric Sciences Graduate Groups in the following topics:

  • Chemical characterization of commercial tobacco or cannabis products, chemistry occurring during vaping
  • Chemistry studies of reactions occurring in the atmosphere or in aerosol water

We look for driven, detail-oriented, and communicative PhD students who work well with a group and independently. PhD students are funded from a combination of graduate research assistantships (grant or project funded), teaching assistantships, or fellowships as they work toward their PhD graduation requirements.

Undergraduate Student Assistants

We are currently seeking undergraduate researchers! https://www.etox.ucdavis.edu/employment/undergraduate-research-intern

Undergraduate students who have a strong background in Chemistry or ETOX and are interested in hands-on research are encouraged to send an unofficial transcript, CV and cover letter to Prof. Nguyen. No previous experience in research is required. We generally consider students who are in their 2nd or 3rd year of undergraduate studies.

The undergraduate research assistants in our lab are valued members, thus, long term placement is preferred. Our undergrads are given opportunities to conduct their own research projects, play important roles helping senior members, present their work at national conferences, and contribute to the scientific literature. Our undergrad alumni have been very successful with publishing peer-reviewed papers (as first authors and co-authors), presenting their results at conferences, winning research awards (including Chandellor's Research Award and Dean's Circle Awards from campus, Department-level awards, and Undergraduate Research Awards from ACS) and moving on to graduate school, professional schools, or jobs in industry.

Postdocs and Research Scientists - Excellent analytical chemists at the postdoctoral or research/project scientist level are encouraged to discuss with Prof. Nguyen about potential opportunities.
